I obtained my Ph.D. from UCSF, and studied the structural evolution of the p53 oligomerization domain in C.elegans and Drosophila by comparing both solution structures obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance. As a senior research associate in Clodagh O'Shea's lab at the Salk Institute, I first stumbled into the world of electron microscopy (EM) by using the genetically encoded EM probe miniSOG to visualize adenoviral nuclear polymer assembly in a cell nucleus, and later conceived ChromEMT in collaboration with Mark Ellisman's lab, to visualize 3D chromatin structures in a cell nucleus by multi-tilt EM tomography with an EM probe that can specifically label chromatin.
