PARALLEL SESSIONS & DEMO SESSIONS:
DCIC DEMOS/TUTORIALS
Monday Sept 18, 2017 @ 12:05 to 1:30 PM (Box lunch provided)
Data Submitters' Summit:
Presenter: Andy Schroeder, Koray Kirli, Burak Alver, DCIC
The DCIC is inviting trainees and staff responsible for submitting data to the data portal to an introductory session. We will introduce ourselves, the metadata model and the submission tools with practical information on preparing submissions. Members of the network who have already submitted data will share their experience. If you are generating data for your 4DN project, you will benefit greatly from knowing what to expect at this last step. And we are looking forward to meeting you and getting your feedback!
Monday Sept 18, 2017 @ 4:30 to 5:30 PM
Visualization and Data Exploration Tools Tutorial:
Presenter: Peter Kerpedijev, Fritz Lekschas, Nils Gehlenborg, DCIC
The DCIC is developing tools to visualize and explore Hi-C interaction and other genomic data generated by the 4D Nucleome Network and others. Our team will present a short tutorial on the capabilities of HiGlass (//http://higlass.io//) and HiPiler (http://hipiler.higlass.io//) aimed at data analysts. In addition to an overview of basic and advanced features, we will cover how to prepare data for use with these tools, how to share visualizations, and how to use Docker to set up and maintain a HiGlass server for private data. This is also a great opportunity to provide input on your current needs and the features that you’d like to see developed in the future.
Tuesday Sept 19, 2017 @ 12:15 to 1:45 PM (Box lunch provided)
Pipeline Standards and Containerization Tutorial:
Presenter: Soohyun Lee, Burak Alver, DCIC
What is all the hype about Docker and Common Workflow Language? How can we develop reproducible/portable/easy-to-run analysis tools? The DCIC would like to run your data analysis pipelines and tools on 4DN data openly on the cloud environment. Join us for an introductory session on Pipeline Standards and Containerization to find out how we can achieve this together. We are looking forward to meeting you and getting your feedback!
IMAGING TUTORIAL
Tuesday Sept 19, 2017 @ 1:45 to 2:45 PM
Microscopy Demo Tutorial:
In this session, we will motivate the need for calibration of microscopes at the optical and photonics* level. We will present real life (optical) calibration data from multiple microscopes, introduce a tool for photonics* calibration and run a live demo on a microscope in the room. Calibration of microscopes can effectively illuminate the technical variables from comparing imaging data and is a powerful tool to track performance of a microscope over time.
* photonics is used to refer to photon generation, transmission and detection
typical illustration: “why is XX seeing 15 times more RNAs compared to my identical experiment, is her microscope that much better or is my assay not working ideal?” – calibration of microscopes enables us to say if the performance of the two microscopes is comparable (excitation intensity, detection efficiency, detector noise, etc.)

Imaging After Meeting Dinner:
When: Tuesday, Sept. 19th, 7:30 pm
Where: Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar 11333 Woodglen Dr, North Bethesda, MD 20852
YOUNG INVESTIGATOR
Monday Sept 18, 2017 @ 4:40 - 5:40 PM
“Speed Dating” For Science:
Meet other graduate students and postdocs, and junior investigators involved in the 4D Nucleome Program at our speed dating session! This fun event will allow young investigators to meet a variety of scientists from across 4DN as they quickly rotate through stations. In addition to making new connections, this event will provide an opportunity to identify potential collaborators for 4DN Young Investigators Trans-Network Projects.
SEPT. 20 WORKSHOP
EXTRA SESSION FOLLOWING THE 2017 4DN ANNUAL MEETING
(This workshop is conducted and organized by NIH)
“Integrated Approaches for Spatial and Temporal Mapping of Gene Activity in Cells and Tissues”
The goal is to use this session to help us explore the technologies and better define the time scales we want to employ in the 4DN. The session will conclude with a discussion of potential opportunities for collaboration.
