Repetitive DNA represents a large portion of the mammalian genome. Many classes of repeats have been identified including large families of sequences often dispersed at many loci, for example, LINEs and SINEs, satellite DNA, ribosomal DNA repeats, as well as locus-specific repeats. Despite evidence of their role in chromatin conformation, the structural organization of chromatin containing repetitive sequences remains largely unknown. Both molecular and imaging approaches are often based on detection of unique sequences and thus difficult to apply to repetitive sequences. This group will explore new approaches to the detection of repeats for a better understanding of their organization within the nucleus and their roles in dynamic changes that take place during the cell cycle and during development in normal and disease conditions. Our goal is to foster collaborations between 4DN groups and with outside groups focused on studies of repeats.
