Steering Committee

Introduction

The 4DN Steering Committee (4DN-SC) is an open group involving all the PI/PD's of the projects funded as part of the 4DN Program. The Steering Committee will meet monthly to discuss items of interest to the Consortium, including policies, future meetings and the opportunity fund initiatives. These will be open meetings and details will be circulated in advance by the Organizational Hub.

For formal decision making, 9 representatives from the PI/PD's and 1 member of staff from the NIH will be selected to represent all of the components of the program. The 4DN-OH PD/PI and 4DN-DCIC PD/PI will be permanent members of the 4DN-SC. All other members of the 4DN-SC will be selected by their peers to serve 2-year term on the 4DN-SC. Renewal or continuation of 4DN-SC membership will be decided during the in-person meeting of the 4DN-SC at the 2nd and 4th annual 4DN Network Investigator Meeting. Other NIH program staff, 4DN-OH staff, 4DN-DCIC staff or external experts may attend the 4DN-SC meetings on a regular or ad-hoc basis, but will be ex officio (non-voting) members. Below is the initial list of representatives chosen by NIH staff to serve on the SC during the first year of the program.

Mission

This can be a statement describing the mission of this committee.

Draft mission statement: the 4D Nucleome Project, April 19, 2016

The 4D Nucleome Project, May 16, 2016

Meetings

1. 4DN Steering committee meetings will take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 8:00-9:30 am PDT, 11:00-12:30 pm EST. An agenda for each call will be sent out prior to the meeting.

2. All voting members should plan to be present at every SC meeting; if they are not able to attend, they should let NIH staff know (Lisa Chadwick) and identify someone from their group who will take their place.

3. NIH requests that groups ensure that a minimum of one senior investigator per grant is on each SC call. However, all 4DN network PIs/co-PIs/senior investigators are invited to participate in the 4DN SC meeting, and may do so as desired.

Summary of SC Member's Talk Link

        • Meeting report. OH has documented a meeting report summarizing the main events, conclusions and decisions from the annual meeting. We have sent this report to steering committee members for inputs. The second 4D Nucleome annual meeting was hosted at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Bethesda, Maryland, USA on September 18-20, 2017. The conference gathered academics of different universities either from the U.S and international institutions to share and discuss chromosome conformation capture technologies and their bioinformatic platforms to characterize nuclear architecture. Scientific talks were mainly organized into three sessions and consisted of both science and rapid fire talks. Dr. Francis Collins, Director of NIH, and the external advisors shared their observations and feedback on how to improve the 4DN program. Working groups also had a chance to report back and speak about their goals for the upcoming year.
        • A survey of the meeting has been distributed and thank many of you for participating. The results can be downloaded here. A total of 113 unique responses were received. Most survey questions used a linear scale where 1 represents worst and 5 represents best.
          • The overall perception of the meeting was quite positive with 76.1% respondents answering 4 or 5;
          • 79.6% of the respondents felt that the registration process is easy;
          • 88.5% of the respondents thought the length of annual meeting is about right, 86.7% were satisfied with the dates of the meeting.

  3. Integrated approaches workshop. Immediately after the annual meeting, there will be an after party workshop titled ”Integrated Approaches for Spatial and Temporal Mapping of Gene Activity in Cells and Tissues“. This workshop will be held on On Sept 20 at Neuroscience Center, 6001 Executive Blvd, on NIH campus. It is half mile walking distance from Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Agenda for this workshop can be found in 4DN wiki under the “Meetings → Integrated approaches workshop”. A total of 83 people indicated that they will go to this workshop.
  4. Preparations for TCPA awards. A brief update on TCPA awards. We would like to thank TCPA awardees Brad Cairns, Antonio Giraldez and Francois Spitz who have animal components in their proposed projects to work closely with us to establish an NIH-required oversight mechanism between UCSD and the awardees home institutions.
  5. Outreach.
    1. Nils Gehlenborg, Jian Ma and others gave tutorial on 3D Genome Data Processing, Analysis, and Visualization in ISMB (International Society for Computational Biology) meeting. To find their instructional materials, you can go to the Outreach & Education page in 4DN web portal and find a hyperlink to this tutorial.
    2. Ting Wang, Jian Ma, Feng Yue and Sheng Zhong gave an introduction to the 4DN networks mission, scope, and undertakings in the 13th International Bioinformatics Workshop.
  • Action Items:
    • Put the topic of addressing key questions in cell line relevant biology in the working group meeting.
    • Today is the deadline for the annual meeting registration. Abstract should be uploaded today. If you registered for the imaging workshop, you would get the email. Or you should go on to register for that.
    • Send comments on the guidelines for uploading DNA FISH data.

    • OH updates:
      • OH seeks approval of having 2018 annual meeting held in conjunction with ASCB meeting. The current plan for the 2018 4DN annual meeting is a 3-day meeting, from December 5th to 7th. The first two days will be a restricted to 4DN members, and the 3rd day will be a symposium open to public. Regarding the open-to-public symposium on the 3rd day, Thoru Pederson, Olivier and Judy discussed with American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB). ASCB organizers have enthusiasm to collaborate with 4DN consortium to make the 4DN symposium as a doorstep meeting of ASCB. The ASCB meeting will be held in San Diego from December 8 to 12. The ASCB doorstep meetings will be on December 7. We would like to ask if there are objections on having the 2018 annual meeting on December 5 - 7. If no objections, we will proceed with ASCB organizers to further coordinate the logistics.
      • A proposed workshop on Experimental Biology (EB) meeting. The 2018 EB meeting will be held from April 21 to 25 in San Diego. American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), a participating society of EB approached the organizational hub for proposing a nucleome workshop on 2018 EB meeting. We are in the process of coordinating with EB regarding a proposed workshop called “Genome and Nucleome”.
